Lippert 3,500 lb. Axle Rating Bearing Kit Included Lippert 814208 Idler Hub with Bearing Cone Kit -- 5 on 4.5 in. Bolt Pattern

The Lippert 814208 is a direct-replacement idler hub designed for 3,500 lb. trailer axles with a 5 on 4.5 in. bolt pattern. Everything you need to complete a hub replacement is bundled in one kit -- bearing cones, bearing cups, a double-lip grease seal, and a cotter pin -- so there are no last-minute trips to the parts counter mid-job.

Drop-In Hub Replacement for 3,500 lb. Trailer Axles

Worn or damaged idler hubs on trailer axles are a leading cause of wheel-bearing failures on the road. The Lippert 814208 replaces the complete hub assembly on a standard 3,500 lb. straight axle, restoring proper bearing preload and sealing. The solid iron construction is built to handle the continuous load cycles that RV and utility trailers put on hubs mile after mile.

Because this is an idler hub -- not a brake drum hub -- it is intended for the non-brake end of an axle, or for axles that run without brakes. If your setup uses electric brakes or surge brakes, verify whether you need a hub-and-drum assembly instead before ordering.

Solid Iron Construction

Durable cast iron hub body handles repeated load cycles and resists deformation under axle-rated weight.

Complete Bearing Kit

Includes inner and outer bearing cones, inner and outer bearing cups, a double-lip grease seal, and a cotter pin -- ready to assemble.

5 on 4.5 in. Bolt Pattern

Standard 5-lug pattern on a 4.5 in. bolt circle. Matches the most common RV trailer wheel configuration in the 13-15 in. wheel range.

1-Year Manufacturer Warranty

Backed by Lippert's limited 1-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.

What Is an Idler Hub?

An idler hub mounts directly on the spindle of a trailer axle and carries the wheel, bearings, and wheel studs -- but it does not incorporate a brake drum. Idler hubs are used on axles without brakes (common on lighter single-axle trailers and on the secondary axle of some tandem setups where only one axle is braked). If your existing hub has a drum cast into it, you have a hub-drum unit, not an idler hub.

Full Kit -- No Separate Bearing Order Needed
Most hub replacements require sourcing bearings, cups, seals, and pins separately. The 814208 bundles all of these components so installation can be completed in a single service session.

What's Included in the Box

  • 1x solid iron idler hub body (with wheel studs)
  • 1x inner bearing cone
  • 1x outer bearing cone
  • 1x inner bearing cup
  • 1x outer bearing cup
  • 1x double-lip grease seal
  • 1x cotter pin
Not Included -- Verify Before Ordering
  • Spindle nut and washer are not included -- reuse your existing hardware if in good condition, or source separately.
  • Dust cap/grease cap is not included in all kit configurations -- inspect yours before disassembly.
  • Wheel lug nuts are not included.
  • Bearing grease is not included -- pack bearings with a high-quality wheel-bearing grease rated for trailer use before installation.

Fitment and Compatibility

This hub is designed for 3,500 lb. straight trailer axles using a 5 on 4.5 in. bolt circle (also written as 5x4.5 or 5-114.3 mm). It accommodates 13 in., 14 in., and 15 in. wheels with the matching bolt pattern. This is a widely used configuration across RV travel trailers, boat trailers, cargo trailers, and utility trailers built on Lippert and comparable axle platforms.

Stud size is 1/2 in., which is standard for this axle class. Confirm your spindle dimensions (inner and outer journal diameters and bearing seat dimensions) match a standard Lippert 3,500 lb. axle before installation if you are replacing a hub from a non-Lippert axle manufacturer.

Bolt Pattern Quick Reference
5 on 4.5 in. means 5 lug holes evenly spaced on a 4.5 in. (114.3 mm) diameter bolt circle. This is one of the most common patterns used on North American travel trailers and light-duty utility trailers. Measure hub-to-hub across opposite studs on a 5-lug wheel to confirm: the measurement across two non-adjacent studs (skipping one) should be approximately 4.5 in.

Installation Notes

Hub replacement on a trailer axle is a straightforward mechanical job for anyone comfortable with wheel-bearing service. Key steps include cleaning the spindle thoroughly, inspecting the spindle for wear or scoring, packing the new bearing cones with grease before pressing them into the cups, seating the grease seal with a seal driver or appropriate socket, and torquing the spindle nut to specification before backing off to the nearest cotter-pin slot.

Maintenance Tip -- Repack Bearings Regularly
Trailer wheel bearings should be inspected and repacked with fresh grease at least once a year, or every 10,000-12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Submerging a trailer in water (boat ramps) accelerates grease washout -- repack after every season of water use. A properly maintained hub assembly will outlast one that is ignored by a wide margin.

Important Information -- Read Before Ordering
  • This is an IDLER hub -- it does not include or accept a brake drum. Do not use as a direct replacement for a hub-drum assembly on a braked axle position.
  • Rated for 3,500 lb. axles only. Do not use on 5,200 lb., 6,000 lb., or heavier axle classes -- bearing sizes and spindle dimensions differ.
  • Sold as a single hub assembly (one wheel position). Order two for a complete axle replacement.
  • Bearing grease, spindle nut, washer, and lug nuts are NOT included. Obtain these before beginning installation.
  • Confirm your axle's bolt pattern is 5 on 4.5 in. before ordering -- the visually similar 5 on 4.75 in. and 5 on 5 in. patterns are NOT compatible.
  • Inspect the spindle for wear, scoring, or corrosion before installing a new hub. A damaged spindle will destroy new bearings quickly.
  • Always torque the spindle nut and install the cotter pin correctly. An improperly retained hub is a serious road-safety hazard.
