Lippert Part No. 116653 16 in. x 1.25 in. Pitch Lippert PLT Slide-Out Rack -- 16 in. x 1.25 in. Pitch

When your RV slide-out won't extend or retract smoothly, a worn or damaged rack gear is often the culprit. The Lippert 116653 PLT rack is a direct OEM-replacement gear rack designed for Lippert electric rack-and-pinion slide-out drive systems. At 16 inches long with a 1.25-inch tooth pitch, this rack restores proper slide function and protects your drive motor from the extra load caused by a stripped or bent rack.

Direct OEM Replacement for Lippert Rack-and-Pinion Slide Systems

Lippert Components is the OEM supplier for slide-out systems on hundreds of RV brands including Coachmen, Forest River, Keystone, Grand Design, Heartland, and many others. The rack-and-pinion design uses a precision-cut gear rack mounted to the slide room frame, driven by a pinion gear connected to an electric motor. Over time, the rack teeth can wear, strip, or crack -- especially on heavily used or improperly lubricated slides.

Replacing just the rack -- rather than the full slide assembly -- is a cost-effective repair that most experienced DIY RVers can complete with basic hand tools. Using the correct Lippert part number (116653) ensures proper tooth engagement with the pinion gear and correct overall length for the slide travel.

OEM Lippert Part

Genuine Lippert replacement rack. Maintains factory tooth geometry and engagement with the original pinion gear.

16 in. Rack Length

16 inches of usable rack length. Sized for specific Lippert slide systems -- verify your existing rack length before ordering.

1.25 in. Tooth Pitch

1.25 in. pitch matches the corresponding Lippert pinion gear. Mismatched pitch will cause binding and motor overload.

Wide RV Brand Coverage

Used on slide systems installed across many Forest River, Keystone, Coachmen, and Heartland coach models equipped with Lippert rack-and-pinion slide drives.

What is a PLT Rack?

"PLT" is Lippert's internal designation for the plastic or composite rack used in their rack-and-pinion slide-out mechanisms. These racks are typically molded from a glass-filled nylon or acetal-type engineering polymer, chosen for its self-lubricating properties, corrosion resistance, and ability to mesh quietly with a metal pinion gear. Unlike a steel rack, a PLT rack is designed to be the sacrificial wear component -- it protects the more expensive motor and pinion gear by wearing first.

Because the rack is the intended wear item, Lippert makes individual rack sections available for replacement. This 16 in. x 1.25 in. section is a specific length segment. Some slides use a single rack; others use multiple rack sections joined end to end. Count your existing rack sections and measure total length before ordering.

Self-Lubricating Polymer Construction: The PLT rack material is engineered for low-friction operation against the steel pinion. Wipe the rack clean and apply a thin coat of Lippert-approved slide-out lubricant or white lithium grease periodically to maximize service life.

Diagnosing a Worn Slide-Out Rack

Common symptoms that point to a rack replacement rather than a motor or gear box problem:

  • Slide extends or retracts but "skips" or jerks at a specific point in travel
  • Grinding or clicking noise during slide operation
  • Slide moves freely for a portion of travel then stops
  • Visible cracked, chipped, or missing teeth on the rack when inspected under the slide room
  • Slide motor runs but the room does not move (rack has jumped the pinion due to worn teeth)
Tip -- Inspect Both the Rack and Pinion: If the rack teeth are badly worn, inspect the pinion gear for matching wear. A worn pinion installed against a fresh rack will accelerate wear on the new part. Replace both if the pinion shows signs of rounding or chipping.

Installation Overview

Rack replacement on a Lippert system typically involves:

  • Fully extending the slide room to access the rack mounting bolts
  • Removing the fasteners (typically 1/4 in. or 5/16 in. bolts) that secure the rack to the slide frame rail
  • Sliding the old rack out of the pinion gear engagement zone
  • Threading the new rack into position and securing with the original fasteners
  • Cycling the slide and checking for smooth engagement at all points of travel
Verify Rack Section Count: Multi-section rack systems require all sections to be in good condition. Replacing one damaged section while leaving adjacent worn sections in place can cause the slide to hang up at the section joints. Inspect the entire rack run before completing the repair.
Maintenance Tip: Lubricate the rack and pinion every season or after extended storage. Use a white lithium grease or a slide-specific lubricant. Avoid petroleum-based greases that can attract dirt and accelerate polymer wear. Keep the rack area clear of road debris, which can jam between the rack and pinion during operation.

Pitch VerificationMeasure tooth-to-tooth distance on existing rack; must equal 1.25 in.
OrientationInspect existing rack for directionality or alignment features before removal
Important Information
  • This listing is for ONE (1) rack section only. Pinion gear, motor, gearbox, and mounting hardware are NOT included.
  • Confirm your existing rack tooth pitch is 1.25 inches before ordering. Installing a rack with an incorrect pitch will damage the pinion gear and motor.
  • Confirm the 16 in. rack length matches the section being replaced. Measure carefully -- multiple rack lengths exist in the Lippert PLT line.
  • Do not operate a slide with a damaged or missing rack section. Doing so can strip the pinion gear and overload the slide motor, causing additional damage.
  • Always retract the slide fully and disconnect shore power or battery before beginning rack replacement work under the coach.
  • Lippert part numbers are model-specific. If you are unsure whether 116653 is the correct rack for your slide system, contact Lippert Components tech support with your coach VIN for confirmation.
