A pigtail is the flexible hose that runs between your LP cylinder valve and the inlet of your changeover or two-stage regulator. "Type 1" refers to the green QCC1 (Quick Closing Coupling) style connector that threads onto the cylinder valve -- the standard used on most portable and RV-mounted LP cylinders sold in the United States since the mid-1990s. It replaced the older POL (left-hand thread plug) style and includes an internal safety check that stops gas flow if the hose end is left open.
If you have an older RV with a POL-style regulator inlet, you will need an adapter. Most modern two-stage and automatic changeover regulators accept Type 1 / QCC1 pigtail connections directly.
Thread the Type 1 fitting hand-tight onto the cylinder valve, then snug with a wrench -- do not overtighten. Connect the opposite (inverted flare) end to your regulator inlet. After installation, check all connections with an LP-rated leak detection solution before lighting any appliances. Inspect the hose assembly at least once per season for cracking, abrasion, or damage, and replace immediately if any deterioration is found.
