What Is a Leaf Spring and When Should You Replace It?

A trailer leaf spring supports the axle and absorbs road shock between the axle tube and the frame. Each leaf is a flat steel strip; stacking multiple leaves increases load capacity and controls deflection. Over time, leaves can crack, lose arch height, or develop fatigue cracks at the eyes -- especially on trailers that are frequently loaded to capacity or towed on rough roads.
