Stage 2 -- the position this 40638 cartridge occupies -- handles fine filtration and chemical reduction. Running both stages in sequence gives you layered protection: coarse first, fine second.
If you are buying a single replacement, confirm which stage needs swapping. The 40638 is the Stage 2 / fine-filter element. The sediment pre-filter is a different part number.
