A capture plate is a required component of the PullRite SuperGlide fifth wheel towing system — the hitch will not function correctly without one. The plate attaches to your trailer's king pin box (skid plate). Once you're hooked up and towing, it isolates the rotation of your trailer's king pin inside the hitch. That movement and rotation is then transferred to the SuperGlide's automatic cam action, which slides the hitch away from the cab along its rails, keeping your trailer from contacting the back of your truck cab during sharp turns.
The 3317 Universal Capture Plate is designed as a fallback option: use it only when none of PullRite's brand-specific Quick Connect capture plates fit your trailer's pin box. It installs with a minimum of 10 bolts through the bottom of the pin box, and the kit includes fore and aft plate extensions, knee braces, and all mounting hardware to adapt to a wide range of pin box shapes. It's compatible with most pin box designs, though it is not compatible with some specialty pin boxes, including MOR/ryde.

Depending on your specific pin box design, a bolt-only installation may not be possible. Whether welding is required comes down to the shape and size of your trailer's king pin plate, not personal preference — this isn't optional hardware you can skip with more bolts.
There are three king pin box configurations:
Bolt-only installation. Drill and fasten with a minimum of 10 bolts through the flange. No welding needed.
Requires welding angle iron supports (not included) to the pin box sides before the plate can be bolted on — unless you instead use the extension plate procedure below.
If the Universal Capture Plate extends more than 2" beyond the front and/or back edge of the king pin plate, the included front and rear extension plates must be welded to the king pin plate for adequate support before the capture plate is bolted on. PullRite's manual walks through tack-welding the extensions in place, trimming them for fit, then permanently welding and grinding the welds smooth prior to final bolt-on installation.
The kit includes the Universal Capture Plate (#331701), front and rear extension plates (#331703), and a complete capture plate hardware kit (#331702) with support angles, support bars, "L" brackets, and all mounting bolts and nuts. A minimum of 10 bolts is required for the final installation regardless of which of the three configurations applies to your pin box; knee brace fasteners, when used, do not count toward that minimum.
