Equal-i-zer Hitch 12,000 lb GTW Made in USA Equal-i-zer 14-2942 Weight Distribution Hitch with 4-Point Sway Control -- No Shank

The Equal-i-zer 14-2942 is the shank-free version of Equal-i-zer's flagship weight distribution system, giving you the freedom to pair this hitch head assembly with the specialty shank that matches your exact tow vehicle drop or rise. Built-in 4-point sway control eliminates the need for aftermarket sway bars and handles up to 1,200 lb tongue weight and 12,000 lb gross towing weight -- all in one compact, no-drill unit made in the USA.

One Hitch Head. Zero Compromises on Sway.

Most weight distribution systems treat sway control as an optional add-on -- a separate bar, bracket, and friction pad bolted to the side. Equal-i-zer integrates sway resistance directly into the spring-arm geometry. When the trailer tries to yaw left or right, all four connection points resist simultaneously. The result is a calmer, more planted tow without the hassle of adjusting a friction-type sway bar every time you hitch up.

Because this kit ships without a shank, you can spec the drop/rise that fits your truck and trailer combination exactly, rather than accepting a fixed-drop compromise. Equal-i-zer sells a full range of specialty shanks (including part 90-02-4100 for 1/2" drop and 7" rise applications) that thread directly into this head assembly.

4-Point Sway Control

Sway resistance is built into all four spring-arm attachment points -- no add-on sway bars, no friction pads, no extra setup steps at the campground.

No Drill Installation

No drilling or tapping required on your frame or trailer tongue. All hardware is included. The snap-up lever locks and releases spring arms quickly without hand tools.

Choose Your Own Shank

Sold without a shank so you can match the exact drop or rise your tow vehicle needs. Compatible with all Equal-i-zer specialty shanks for 2" x 2" receivers.

Lifetime Warranty

Backed by Equal-i-zer's limited lifetime manufacturer warranty. Built and assembled in the USA from domestic materials.

What Is Included in This Kit

This assembly contains everything required to complete installation except the shank and standard hand tools. Specifically, the kit includes:

  • Hitch head (ball mount platform)
  • Two 36" x 1-1/2" spring arms
  • Snap-up lever and lift brackets
  • 2-5/16" hitch ball (pre-installed)
  • All mounting hardware and fasteners
  • Owner's manual with torque specs and bracket placement chart

Not included: Shank (sold separately), installation tools, ball mount socket wrench.

Recommended Shank: Equal-i-zer part 90-02-4100 (1/2" drop / 7" rise, 2" shank) is a popular pairing for standard half-ton and three-quarter-ton trucks. Other rise/drop configurations are available -- verify your tow vehicle receiver height and trailer coupler height before ordering.

Sway-Control Bracket Placement

Correct sway-control bracket positioning is critical to performance. Mount the sway-control brackets on the trailer frame 27" to 32" back from the center of the coupler. This range accommodates most trailer A-frame tongue lengths. Measure before drilling any bracket holes and confirm the trailer frame height does not exceed 6" at the bracket location.

Frame Height Limit: The Equal-i-zer spring-arm geometry is engineered for trailer frame heights up to 6 inches. Frames taller than 6" will not allow proper spring-arm angle and will reduce weight-transfer effectiveness. Verify your trailer's frame height before purchase.

Receiver and Tow Vehicle Requirements

This hitch head requires a 2" x 2" trailer hitch receiver on the tow vehicle rated for the tongue weight and gross towing weight of your specific trailer. The receiver rating must meet or exceed 1,200 lb tongue weight and 12,000 lb GTW. Do not install on a receiver rated below these thresholds -- receiver ratings are stamped on the hitch body or listed in the tow vehicle owner's manual.

  • Receiver opening: 2" x 2" required
  • Receiver must be rated for weight-distribution use (some receivers are tongue-weight-only rated)
  • Shank pin diameter: matches Equal-i-zer specialty shank specs (5/8" pin, standard)
Weight Rating Heads-Up: The 1,200 lb tongue weight and 12,000 lb GTW are the hitch's maximum ratings -- not your tow vehicle's ratings. Always use the lower of: the hitch rating, the receiver rating, and the tow vehicle's published towing capacity. Exceeding any single rating is unsafe regardless of the others.

Why No-Shank Makes Sense

Every tow vehicle and trailer combination has a unique "ball height" requirement -- the vertical distance from the ground to the center of the hitch ball that levels the trailer. A fixed-shank hitch forces you to accept whatever drop or rise was molded in. The no-shank Equal-i-zer lets you dial in the correct ball height precisely by choosing a shank with the exact drop or rise you need, without compromising the sway-control or weight-distribution geometry of the head itself.

This also means the hitch head assembly can be re-used if you change tow vehicles -- simply swap the shank instead of replacing the entire system.

Maintenance Tips:
  • Grease the hitch ball, spring-arm sockets, and snap-up lever pivot points before first use and every 3,000 miles or at the start of each season.
  • Inspect spring arms for cracks, bends, or scoring before each trip. Do not use damaged spring arms.
  • Re-torque all mounting bolts after the first 50 miles of towing and check periodically thereafter.
  • Clean and dry the assembly before storing for the season to prevent surface rust on spring arms.

Important Information -- Read Before Installing
  • This kit does NOT include a shank. The hitch head cannot be installed without purchasing a compatible Equal-i-zer specialty shank separately.
  • Do not exceed 1,200 lb tongue weight or 12,000 lb gross towing weight under any circumstances. Always use the lowest applicable rating across hitch, receiver, and tow vehicle.
  • Requires a 2" x 2" receiver rated for weight-distribution use. Ball-only or tongue-weight-only receivers are not appropriate for this application.
  • Trailer frame height at the sway-control bracket location must not exceed 6". Exceeding this height compromises spring-arm geometry and weight-distribution performance.
  • This hitch is engineered for the 2-5/16" ball included. Do not substitute a different ball diameter without verifying coupler compatibility.
  • Follow all torque specifications in the owner's manual. Improperly torqued fasteners are a leading cause of hitch failure on the road.
  • Periodic lubrication of all pivot and contact points is required to maintain sway-control performance and extend component life.
Weight Distribution: Weight distribution is the ability of a hitch to transfer some of the tongue weight of the trailer from the rear axle of the tow vehicle to the front axle of the tow vehicle, and backward to the trailer axles. Without weight distribution the tow vehicle “teeter-totters” on the rear axle of the tow vehicle, and un-weights the front axle. Proper weight distribution transfers weight back to the front steering axle, forcing it back to the ground. Proper weight distribution also adds performance to the integrated sway control feature of your Equal-i-zer hitch. The Equal-i-zer hitch requires a minimum tongue weight of at least 10% of gross trailer weight. This tongue weight gets distributed, and helps generate the friction needed to reduce trailer sway.

Sway Control: Integrated sway control is a built-in, patent pending feature of your Equal-i-zer hitch. Once the spring arms are tensioned, the sway control is in force. Integrated sway control works through the connection between your spring arms and L-brackets, and between the sockets and hitch head. The Equal-i-zer hitch takes advantage of the steel-on-steel friction generated at these points to help reduce trailer sway. This added friction makes it much more difficult for the trailer to sway side-to-side while its being towed, as is usual when you encounter a gust of wind, or passing semi. When set up well and properly adjusted for your load, the Equal-i-zer can noticeably reduce sway.

The Equal-i-zer Engineering Behind The Hitch

Sway Control Hitch

1. Sway Control Brackets:

Rigid trailer attachments work with friction sway control to combat trailer sway. Brackets are height adjustable to control the amount of weight distribution tension on the spring arms.

2. Spring Arms:

The spring arms serve two purposes. When raised onto the sway control brackets they transfer trailer tongue weight evenly to the tow vehicle. They also work with the friction sway control to reduce trailer sway.

3. Downward Pressure:

Downward pressure from trailer tongue increases friction sway control.

4. Upward Pressure:

Sway control brackets distribute weight by maintaining upward pressure on spring arms. The amount of pressure on the spring arms is a factor of trailer tongue weight and vehicle suspension. The friction sway control utilizes this pressure to control trailer sway.

5. Friction sway control:

Friction is enhanced by downward pressure from trailer tongue and upward pressure on spring arms. These opposing pressures come together to create an unequaled sway control system.
