A conventional heat tape runs at a fixed wattage and can overheat if coiled or buried under insulation. The self-regulating cable in the Camco 22922 uses a conductive polymer core that changes electrical resistance as temperature shifts. When it gets cold, resistance drops and current increases -- generating more heat exactly where the hose is coldest. When ambient temps rise, resistance increases and output backs off automatically. The result is consistent freeze protection with minimal energy waste and no burnout risk.
The 18 AWG power cord includes a lighted end cap (LEG -- Lighted End Guard) that glows when power is connected. This makes it easy to confirm the hose is energized at a glance, especially in low-light conditions at dawn or dusk in a winter campsite.
