Dual Detection RV Safe RVCOLP-2W Propane Gas & CO Detector/Alarm
Protect your family from two deadly threats with one sleek, low-profile alarm. The RV Safe RVCOLP-2W detects both propane gas leaks and carbon monoxide, featuring ultra-low power draw, fewer false alarms, and universal mounting brackets that fit 90% of existing detector cutouts.

Overview

The RV Safe RVCOLP-2W is a dual-function safety alarm that monitors for both propane (LP) gas leaks and carbon monoxide (CO) – the two most dangerous gas threats in RVs. Using advanced electrochemical sensing technology, this detector quickly alerts you to hazardous gas levels while minimizing annoying false alarms from non-threatening substances.LP + CO ComboLow Power5-Year Life

🔥 Propane Detection

Detects LP gas before explosive levels

💨 CO Detection

Alerts to invisible, odorless killer

⚡ Low Power Draw

Battery lasts up to 5x longer

🔧 Universal Mount

Fits 90% of existing cutouts

✅ Why Both LP and CO Detection Matters

Propane (LP) Gas: Forms explosive mixtures with air. A small leak from your stove, furnace, or water heater can quickly become deadly. LP gas is heavier than air and settles near the floor – that's why RV detectors must be mounted low.

Carbon Monoxide (CO): The "silent killer" – colorless, odorless, and tasteless. Any propane appliance can produce CO if not burning properly. CO is especially dangerous while sleeping because you won't notice the symptoms until it's too late.

Key Features

  • Dual gas detection – monitors both propane and carbon monoxide
  • Advanced electrochemical CO sensor – highly selective, fewer false alarms
  • Ultra-low power consumption – 17mA typical draw extends battery life
  • Distinct alarm patterns – different sounds for LP vs CO
  • Universal mounting brackets – replace 90% of existing detectors
  • Sleek, low-profile design – only 0.57" deep
  • Test/Silence button – easy testing and nuisance alarm silencing
  • 5-year sensor life – replace by date on front of unit
  • Simple 2-wire installation – connects to 12V RV battery
  • 85 dB alarm – loud enough to wake you

Alarm Patterns – Know the Difference

The RV Safe uses distinct alarm patterns so you know which gas triggered the alarm:

Gas Detected Sound Pattern LED Indicator Action Required
Propane (LP) Continuous beeping Solid RED Evacuate immediately – explosion risk
Carbon Monoxide 4-beep pattern Flashing RED Evacuate and ventilate
Both Gases Propane pattern (priority) Solid RED Evacuate immediately

If both gases are present, the alarm indicates propane first because it requires more immediate action (explosion risk).

🚨 If The Alarm Sounds

1. Evacuate immediately – get everyone out of the RV
2. Do NOT use electrical switches – sparks can ignite propane
3. Open doors and windows (if safe to do so)
4. Turn off propane at the tank (if safe to do so)
5. Call for help from outside – do not re-enter until gas clears
6. Have appliances inspected before using again

Fewer False Alarms

One of the biggest complaints about RV gas detectors is false alarms from non-threatening substances. The RV Safe uses a highly selective electrochemical CO sensor that distinguishes between actual carbon monoxide and other gases or chemicals that might set off inferior detectors.

Common false alarm triggers that RV Safe handles better:

  • Cooking fumes and grease
  • Cleaning products
  • Hair spray and grooming products
  • Fresh paint or adhesives

⚠️ Substances That Can Damage Sensors

While RV Safe reduces false alarms, certain substances can cause permanent sensor damage. Keep these away from your detector:

• Silicone adhesives and caulk
• Silicone lubricants
• Stain guards and fabric protectors
• Heavy concentrations of hairspray

If exposed to these substances, the detector may need replacement.

Low Power Draw = Longer Battery Life

The RV Safe draws only 17mA at 13.5V – significantly less than many competing detectors that draw 50-100+ mA. This matters because:

  • Battery lasts up to 5x longer in storage
  • Less drain while dry camping – more power for other devices
  • Reduced risk of dead battery when returning to your RV

The detector is powered continuously from your 12V RV battery – it does NOT have its own battery. This ensures protection whenever your RV has power.

Universal Mounting – Replace Almost Any Detector

The RV Safe includes two universal mounting brackets that allow you to replace approximately 90% of existing RV propane and CO detectors without cutting new holes. These brackets cover the cutouts from most major brands:

  • Safe-T-Alert (MTI Industries) – 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 65, 70, 85 Series
  • Atwood / Dometic detectors
  • CCI Controls
  • Most other surface and flush-mount detectors

🔧 Simple Installation

No sawing or routers required!

1. Disconnect power (turn off battery disconnect or remove fuse)
2. Remove old detector
3. Select appropriate mounting bracket (if needed to cover old cutout)
4. Drill 5/8" to 3/4" hole for wires (if needed)
5. Connect red wire to +12V, black wire to ground
6. Mount with included screws
7. Restore power and test

Installation typically takes 15-30 minutes.

Mounting Location

Proper placement is critical for accurate detection:

  • Mount within 18" of the floor – propane is heavier than air and settles low
  • Near propane appliances – but not directly in exhaust path
  • Away from windows and doors – drafts can prevent gas from reaching sensor
  • Not in dead air spaces – ensure air can circulate to sensor

CO Detection Response Times

The RV Safe meets UL 2034 requirements for CO detection response times:

CO LevelResponse Time
70 ppm60-120 minutes
150 ppm10-30 minutes
400 ppm4-15 minutes

Lower CO concentrations trigger slower alarms because they're less immediately dangerous. Higher concentrations trigger faster alarms to give you time to evacuate.

5-Year Lifespan

The sensors in the RV Safe have an approximate 5-year lifespan from first power-up. After 5 years, the detector will indicate end-of-life with a double red flash and chirp once per minute. The unit cannot be reset – it must be replaced.

Important: The 5-year clock doesn't start until 12V power is connected. However, you must replace the detector by the "REPLACE BY" date on the front of the unit, regardless of when it was first powered.

💡 Testing Your Detector

How often: Test after storage, before each trip, and at least weekly during use.

Using Test Button: Press Test/Silence button – alarm should sound. This tests electronics only.

Testing LP Sensor: Carefully expose to propane or butane for 30 seconds (no open flames!). Alarm should activate. Ventilate RV afterward.

Testing CO Sensor: Cannot be simulated by test button. CO test kits available online if needed.

Error Codes & Troubleshooting

If the detector chirps once per minute, check for these conditions:

  • End of life – double red flash + chirp = replace detector
  • Low voltage – ensure battery is properly charged
  • Sensor fault – unit must be replaced (no reset available)

Note: After being unpowered for several weeks, the detector may briefly alarm as sensors "warm up." This is normal – it will reset after a few minutes.
