There are few things more unwelcome on a chilly RV trip than a furnace that refuses to ignite. That blast of warm air is something we rely on for comfort, and when it doesn’t come, it can quickly put a damper on things.

As an RVer, I’ve troubleshooted my fair share of furnace issues, and often, the problem is something relatively simple. Today, I want to cover some of the common reasons why your RV furnace might not be lighting and what you can do about it.

Low battery voltage, propane supply issues (empty tank, regulator), or a blocked sail switch are common culprits when an RV furnace won’t ignite. Sometimes it’s as simple as resetting the furnace. This is excellent advice and covers the most frequent offenders.

Understanding How Your RV Furnace Works (The Basics)

Most RV furnaces are forced-air systems, meaning they use a fan (blower motor) to draw air from inside the RV, pass it over a heat exchanger, and then distribute the heated air back into the RV through ductwork. The heat is generated by burning propane.

The ignition sequence typically involves:

  1. The thermostat calls for heat.
  2. The blower motor starts to purge the combustion chamber (a safety step).
  3. The sail switch confirms adequate airflow from the blower.
  4. The gas valve opens, and the igniter (either a spark igniter or a hot surface igniter) attempts to light the propane.
  5. A flame sensor confirms ignition and continuous flame.

If any step in this sequence fails, the furnace will usually go into a lockout mode after a few failed ignition attempts to prevent unburned propane from accumulating.


Common Causes for RV Furnace Ignition Failure

Propane Supply Issues

  • Empty Propane Tank(s): It sounds obvious, but always check this first! Ensure you have propane and that the tank valve is open.
  • Faulty Regulator: The propane regulator reduces the high pressure from the tank to a lower, usable pressure for your appliances. If the regulator is failing, it might not be supplying enough gas pressure. Sometimes, a quick reset of the regulator (closing the tank valve, waiting a minute, then opening it very slowly) can help.
  • Air in the Lines: If you’ve recently changed propane tanks or run out, there might be air in the lines. Try lighting your stove burners first to purge the air until you have a steady blue flame, then try the furnace again.
  • Excess Flow Valve Tripped: Propane tanks have an excess flow valve that can trip if a valve is opened too quickly or if there’s a major leak. Closing the tank valve and reopening it very slowly can reset this.

Low Battery Voltage

  • The furnace_s blower motor, control board, and igniter all require good 12-volt DC power. If your house batteries are low (typically below 10.5-11 volts under load), the blower might run too slowly for the sail switch to engage, or there might not be enough power for proper ignition.
  • Check your battery voltage. If low, charge your batteries (plug into shore power, run the generator, or use solar).

Blocked or Faulty Sail Switch

  • The sail switch is a small microswitch with a plastic “sail” or paddle that moves when the blower motor creates sufficient airflow. If there isn_t enough airflow (due to low voltage, a failing blower motor, or obstructions like insect nests or lint in the blower wheel or ducting), the sail switch won’t close, and the furnace won’t proceed to the ignition step.
  • Sometimes, the sail switch itself can become stuck or fail. Accessing it usually requires removing the furnace cover. You can test it for continuity with a multimeter if you’re comfortable doing so.

RV Furnace Troubleshooting Steps

Ignition System Problems

  • Faulty Igniter: Whether it’s a spark igniter or a hot surface igniter, these components can fail. Spark igniters can get corroded or the gap might be wrong. Hot surface igniters are fragile and can crack.

  • Igniter Board/Control Board Issues: The control board manages the ignition sequence. A fault here can prevent ignition.

  • RV furnaces draw combustion air from outside and exhaust fumes outside. Ensure these vents on the exterior of your RV are clear of obstructions like insect nests, mud dauber nests, or even heavy snow/ice.

Furnace Reset / Lockout Mode

  • Sometimes a simple reset is needed. If the furnace has tried to ignite multiple times and failed, it will go into lockout. Turning the thermostat off, waiting a few minutes, and then turning it back on can reset it. Some furnaces also have a reset switch on the unit itself (consult your furnace manual).

Furnace Age and Condition

  • If your furnace is older or has been problematic, it might be time to consider a replacement.

  • Safety First: If you smell propane, turn off the gas at the tank immediately, ventilate the RV, and do not operate any electrical switches or create sparks. Find and fix the leak before proceeding.

  • Try Resetting: Turn the thermostat off, wait, then on. Check for a furnace reset switch.
