The FreshJet 5 slides into your existing 14"x14" roof opening and delivers meaningful upgrades over the Penguin II it replaces: a built-in hard start capacitor, R-32 refrigerant, a reinforced steel base, and up to 9 dB less noise -- all in the same 10.5" low-profile shroud that clears awnings and garage clearances.
If your Penguin II is aging out, the FreshJet 5 is the purpose-built successor. Same 14"x14" roof cutout, same bolt pattern, same low-profile footprint -- but with a generation of engineering improvements baked in. You are not just replacing a failed unit; you are getting a quieter, more efficient, longer-lasting system without cutting a new hole in your roof.
The 13,500 BTU rating makes this the right choice for coaches up to roughly 30--35 feet, single-zone cooling or the primary unit in a two-AC setup. The compact 10.5" rooftop height is critical for rigs that store in low-clearance garages or travel under height-restricted bridges.
Integrated hard start capacitor pulls the compressor up on generators and shore power without a separate add-on kit.
Redesigned fan and compressor isolation reduce cabin noise compared to the outgoing Penguin II series.
Lower global warming potential than R-410A. Pre-charged at the factory -- no field refrigerant work needed.
Heavier-gauge mounting base resists flex and fatigue over tens of thousands of road miles.
The FJX5457MWHCS is engineered as a direct swap for Dometic Penguin II units using the standard 14"x14" roof opening. The mounting bolt pattern and ceiling assembly interface are retained so your existing ceiling assembly (duct kit or non-ducted box) works with the new unit. Verify your specific ceiling assembly compatibility before ordering if you use a ducted distribution system.
R-32 is a single-component refrigerant (unlike R-410A blends) which means it can be reclaimed and recharged more cleanly if service is ever needed. It operates at similar pressures to R-410A. The system arrives factory-sealed and pre-charged. Field refrigerant service must be performed by a certified HVAC technician. Do not mix refrigerant types.
The built-in hard start capacitor is one of the most practical upgrades in the FreshJet 5. Many 13,500 BTU rooftop ACs draw a locked-rotor amperage spike at startup that overwhelms smaller portable generators (3,000--3,500W range). The hard start capacitor in the FreshJet 5 dramatically reduces that startup surge, giving you a fighting chance on a 3,000W generator -- though a 3,500W or larger unit is recommended for reliable starts with lights and other loads running.
The FJX5457MWHCS is the rooftop condenser/evaporator unit only. The ceiling assembly (air distribution box, return air grille, or duct kit) is sold separately. Your existing Penguin II ceiling assembly may be reusable -- confirm compatibility with the FreshJet 5 before installation. Dometic offers both non-ducted and ducted ceiling kits for this unit.
