How To Find the Right RV Propane Hose, Regulator, Adapter, Fitting, Tank, or Detector

RV propane parts can be confusing because the connections look similar, but they are not all the same. This guide helps you narrow the search by what you are trying to fix or connect: replacing a cracked hose, hooking up a grill, changing a regulator, adding a tank gauge, matching a fitting, or replacing an LP gas detector.

Start With What You Are Trying To Do

Most customers do not know whether they need an adapter, fitting, pigtail, regulator, or quick-connect hose. Start with the job first, then match the connection type second.

Replace a propane hose

Choose this when the existing hose is cracked, leaking, too short, kinked, or has damaged ends.

  • Tank to regulator pigtails
  • High-pressure hoses
  • Low-pressure quick-connect hoses

Connect a grill, fire pit, or heater

Choose this when you want to connect portable propane equipment to your RV or to a portable cylinder.

  • Quick-connect hoses
  • Low-pressure appliance hoses
  • Adapters for grill and RV connections
Shop propane adapters

Replace a regulator

Choose this when appliances have weak flame, inconsistent gas flow, regulator vent damage, or the regulator is old and failing.

  • Two-stage regulators
  • Auto-changeover regulators
  • Regulator brackets and replacement pigtails

Match a brass fitting

Choose this when you are repairing or adapting a propane line and need the same thread style and size.

  • Flare fittings
  • NPT pipe fittings
  • Unions, elbows, tees, caps, and plugs

Check propane tank level

Choose this when you want a better way to monitor propane before a trip or while camping.

  • Inline propane gauges
  • Bluetooth tank sensors
  • Tank level indicators

Replace an LP gas detector

Choose this when your propane alarm is expired, chirping, damaged, or no longer powers up correctly.

  • Hardwired RV propane detectors
  • Combination LP and carbon monoxide alarms
  • Replacement detector models

Common RV Propane Connections

The fastest way to buy the wrong propane part is to match by looks alone. Identify the connection type, thread size, and whether the connection is before or after the regulator.

Connection Type Where You Usually See It What To Know
ACME / Type 1 / QCC Modern portable propane cylinders, RV trailer tongue tanks, pigtail hoses Large plastic hand nut that threads onto the outside of the tank valve. Common on newer RV cylinders.
POL Older propane tank connections, some adapters, some high-pressure setups Threads into the inside of the tank valve. Often uses left-hand threads.
Flare Propane tubing, pigtails, appliance connections, brass fittings Seals on the angled metal flare, not on the threads. Do not use pipe tape on flare seats.
NPT pipe thread Regulators, tees, elbows, adapters, valves Tapered pipe thread. Requires LP-rated thread sealant where appropriate. Do not confuse with flare.
Quick connect RV exterior propane ports, grills, outdoor kitchens, portable appliances Usually low pressure after the RV regulator. Many portable grills have their own regulator and may need modification or the correct low-pressure hose.
Pigtail hose Between the propane cylinder and regulator Short hose used on RV trailer propane tanks. Match tank end, regulator end, length, and pressure rating.

Propane Hose Buying Guide

Tank to regulator

Use an RV propane pigtail hose. These usually run from the portable cylinder to the regulator on the front of a travel trailer or fifth wheel.

Shop pigtail and LP hoses

RV quick connect to appliance

Use a low-pressure quick-connect hose. This is common for grills, fire pits, and outdoor cooking setups connected to the RV's exterior propane port.

Shop quick-connect hoses

Need more reach

Measure the full routing path. Do not buy a hose that will be stretched tight, pinched by a compartment door, or rubbing against sharp metal.

Shop LP hose extensions

Replacing an old hose

Match both hose ends before ordering. The most common mistake is buying the right length with the wrong fitting on one side.

Regulators: When To Replace and What Type To Choose

The regulator reduces tank pressure to the correct pressure for RV appliances. If the regulator is not working correctly, appliances may light poorly, burn weakly, or shut down when more than one propane appliance is running.

Regulator Type Best For Notes
Two-stage regulator Most RV propane systems Provides steadier pressure than a single-stage regulator and is commonly used on RVs.
Auto-changeover regulator Travel trailers and fifth wheels with two propane cylinders Automatically switches from the empty cylinder to the reserve cylinder when set up properly.
Single-stage regulator Specific appliance or limited-use setups Use only where the application calls for it. Most full RV systems should use the correct RV regulator setup.
Practical tip: If you are replacing an old regulator, inspect the pigtail hoses at the same time. Old pigtails can crack, leak, restrict flow, or have worn fittings.

Adapters vs Fittings: They Are Not the Same Thing

Use an adapter when...

You are trying to connect one propane connection style to another, such as POL to ACME, disposable cylinder to hose, or RV quick connect to an accessory hose.

Shop LP adapters

Use a fitting when...

You are repairing, capping, branching, or joining propane line components with matching thread types and sizes.

Shop LP fittings

Important LP fitting warning

  • Do not force propane fittings. If it does not thread smoothly, stop and verify the connection type.
  • Do not use ordinary plumbing fittings unless they are specifically approved for LP gas use.
  • Flare fittings seal at the flare seat, not on the threads.
  • Always leak test after installing or reconnecting LP parts.

Tank Gauges, Sensors, Locks, Bases, and Other Accessories

Propane accessories make the RV LP system easier to monitor, protect, and service. These are the parts customers often need but do not know how to search for.

Tank level gauges

Inline gauges and visual indicators help estimate propane level before and during a trip.

Shop tank gauges

Bluetooth tank sensors

Sensors such as magnetic tank monitors can make propane level checking easier without removing tank covers.

Shop tank sensors

Tank locks and mounts

Useful for securing propane cylinders, stabilizing tanks, or mounting regulators and related hardware.

Propane Tanks: DOT Cylinders vs ASME Tanks

RVs generally use one of two propane tank styles. Travel trailers and fifth wheels commonly use removable DOT cylinders. Motorhomes commonly use permanently mounted ASME tanks.

Tank Type Common RV Use Buying Notes
DOT cylinder Travel trailers, fifth wheels, truck campers, portable use Usually vertical and removable. Common sizes include 20 lb and 30 lb cylinders. Check recertification date.
ASME tank Motorhomes and permanent RV installations Permanently mounted to the RV. Replacement and service should be matched carefully to the RV installation.

LP Gas Detectors

Propane detectors are safety devices and they do not last forever. If your detector is expired, chirping, damaged, or no longer powers up correctly, replace it with a compatible RV-rated unit.

Check the date

Many RV LP detectors have a service life printed on the unit or listed by the manufacturer. Replace expired detectors.

Match voltage and wiring

Most RV propane detectors are hardwired to 12-volt DC power, but wiring and alarm combinations vary by model.

Match the opening

Measure the old detector and check whether the replacement covers the same cutout or requires an adapter plate.

Before You Order: Quick Checklist

  • What are you connecting: tank, regulator, RV line, quick-connect port, appliance, or accessory?
  • Is the part before the regulator or after the regulator?
  • Do you need high-pressure or low-pressure propane hose?
  • What are the fitting types on both ends?
  • What size are the threads or flare connections?
  • How long does the hose need to be without stretching, kinking, or rubbing?
  • Do you also need leak detector solution, mounting brackets, caps, plugs, or a tank gauge?

RV Propane Parts FAQ

What is the difference between a propane adapter and a propane fitting?

An adapter changes one connection type to another. A fitting is usually used to join, cap, branch, or repair propane line components with specific thread sizes and styles.

Can I connect a portable grill to my RV quick-connect port?

Usually yes, but the details matter. Many RV quick-connect ports are already low pressure because they are after the RV regulator. If the grill has its own regulator, you may need the correct low-pressure hose or adapter setup.

Do I need pipe tape on propane fittings?

It depends on the fitting type. NPT pipe threads may require LP-rated sealant, but flare fittings seal at the flare seat and should not rely on tape on the threads.

How do I know if I need a high-pressure or low-pressure hose?

If the hose is between the tank and the regulator, it is typically high pressure. If it is after the regulator, such as an RV quick-connect appliance hose, it is usually low pressure.

When should I replace my RV propane regulator?

Replace it if it is damaged, leaking, severely corroded, has a blocked or damaged vent, or if propane appliances show weak or inconsistent flow after other causes have been ruled out.

How often should an RV LP gas detector be replaced?

Follow the date and instructions on the detector or from the manufacturer. If it is expired, unreliable, or not powering up correctly, replace it.

Propane safety reminder

  • Turn off propane before replacing hoses, regulators, adapters, or fittings.
  • Use only LP-rated parts.
  • Leak test every connection after installation.
  • Do not use an open flame to check for leaks.
  • If you smell propane or are unsure about the repair, stop and have the system checked by a qualified RV technician.

Still Not Sure Which Propane Part You Need?

Propane connections can be hard to identify from memory. If you are replacing an existing part, compare both ends, measure the hose length, and note whether it connects before or after the regulator. Photos of the old part and the connection points can make matching much easier.
